Our intent with the Heather’s Vineyard Pinots is to create the most elegant expression of our vineyard using the lightest amount of oak. Over the years, we have found that French oak barrels used for just one vintage produce the most subtle Pinots from this cool hillside site. These once-filled barrels contribute the complexities one might expect from new barrels, but with a softened, refined style. Grapes are selected from Reserve rows, cropped to less than 1.5 tons per acre.
92 points: Parker “Delightfully scented with a meadow’s worth of herbs and flowers, but especially prominent is a sachet-like evocation of rose petal and lavender. Bright, tart-edged cherry and cranberry fruit is sappy and expansive as well as gripping in its persistence, yet the overall effect of this 12.4% alcohol effort is almost delicate (including its color), and its palate feel silken. A strikingly urchin roe-like undertone serves for mouthwatering umami-richness that I found utterly irresistible. I suspect this will be worth following through at least 2018.”
92 points: Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar. Bright red. Highly aromatic nose displays fresh raspberry, dried rose and Asian spices. Penetrating, with a distinct spiciness to its primary flavors of red berries, candied flowers and cola. Packs a punch but comes off lithe, showing potent floral and spice character on the long, sappy finish. Stands out in this vintage for its richness and power.
91 points: Wine Enthusiast. This is a lovely, balanced wine, combining grip, texture and elegant details. It starts with clean fruit flavors of berry and cherry, bringing in delicate notes of root beer, vanilla and clove. There’s a suggestion of brine also, the whole delivering marvelous complexity.
